Is Your Property a Target for Theft? Factors That Attract Burglars to Your Home

As much as we would all love to say that our houses will never be burgled, it’s unfortunately something that you can’t predict. Whilst break-ins happen randomly all over the country, there are often certain things that attract burglars to individual properties.

These factors are often the reason why your home may be targeted over another – which is why identifying them is the first step to being able to prevent your property from being broken into.

Empty Houses

Even though horror movies lead us to believe that houses always get broken into whilst you’re asleep in bed, it’s actually far more likely that your home will be targeted because it’s empty. A lot of break-ins happen during the day – as this is when most people are out of the house at work. Most opportunist thieves won’t target occupied homes – there is more chance of them being caught.

If someone has been watching your home for a while, they will look for things like your curtains not being opened as a sign to see if you’re often away from the home.

Secluded Houses

Your home doesn’t have to be in a complete remote location – even those located on a quiet cul-de-sac or low traffic areas are more likely to be targeted than those in busier locations. This is simply because there is obviously less chance of them being spotted by someone. The quieter the area – the easier it is to get in and out without alerting the suspicion of anyone.

Houses with Easy to Hide Areas

The way your home is designed, including the landscape, could be the reason for why your home becomes a target for theft. If your home has places that are easy for someone to hide in – such as bushes under windows – this makes it easy for criminals to watch your home to see when you’re in or out. Thieves are attracted to messy gardens with overgrown lawns, as this again gives them to the perfect opportunity to hide.

Lack of Security

No security (or no obvious security) is probably the number one reason for why your house becomes a lot more attractive to a burglar. Why risk breaking into a home with an alarm system when they could break into yours undetected? Good quality security could be what prevents your home from being targeted – so it’s worth spending a little bit of money getting it installed.

5 Safety Tips For Those Who Live Alone

Living alone is wonderful. You don’t have to fight over the television remote, you don’t have to explain where you’re going all the time, and you don’t need to worry about someone else drinking all your milk or eating your special ice cream.

However, living alone comes with security risks that need to be acknowledged. You’re more at risk of becoming a target to burglars, which means you need to take extra precautions when it comes to your safety.

As professional locksmiths in Preston, we know that good security is important in any household, no matter who lives there. However, those who don’t have extra eyes and ears in the home definitely need to take extra steps to protect themselves.

Get to Know Your Neighbours

No you don’t have to become best friends with those who live around you, but you should make yourself known to them. Simply take the time to introduce yourself, or make an effort to say hello every morning or evening.

Having an extra pair of eyes or two looking out for you will allow you to feel more secure. They are more likely to check on you if you build some kind of relationship – something that could prove to be extremely helpful if you ever find yourself in trouble.

However, avoid giving out personal information until you know them well.

Get a Pet

Burglars are less likely to target houses that have pets. They hate the added complication of having to deal with noisy pets – especially dogs. Dogs are likely to bark when they hear unwanted noises such as an intruder – alerting you to potential danger and scaring away the criminal.

Apart from security advantages, pets can also keep you company! Living alone is fun but it can get lonely – getting a pet can help ease this feeling!

Install Good Security

There is nothing better at keeping you and your home protected than having good security in place. From a good burglar alarm, to motion sensors in your garden – these items can keep you safe and make you feel more secure.

Remember that it’s important to always lock your door. Whether you’re inside or you’ve nipped out – you should always keep your door locked. Some opportunists will simply check to see if houses are locked and then walk straight in.

Close Your Curtains

It sounds so simple yet can be very effective. Your nearest and dearest know that you live by yourself, but why let everyone else know? Closing your curtains at night will stop people looking in and realising that you are home alone.

Closed curtains will also stop potential burglars knowing what you have in your home – keep expensive items out of view.

Invite People Over When Strangers Are Expected

If you’ve got someone coming around to look at your leaky boiler, or you’ve got an electrician coming to sort out your electric, you should consider inviting a friend to come and sit with you. This means that you’re not allowing a stranger to know that you live alone, and you will feel more comfortable having someone else in the house with you.

As you can see, good security can prevent burglaries from taking place. However, these things do still happen.

If you’ve recently experienced a break in at home, or you just want to get the locks replaced for security reasons, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

4 Common Home Security Mistakes

Despite the amount of brilliant home security products that are available today, people are still making mistakes with their security that could easily have been avoided. Even the smallest security mishaps can be ceased upon by opportunist burglars, leading to your house being broken into and burgled.

A lot of burglaries could be prevented if people were more careful when it came to their home security. To help you thwart anything horrible happening to your property, we’ve put together a list of some of the most common home security mistakes – so you can make sure you don’t make them!

Leaving a Key Outside

For some reason, despite all the risks, people still “hide” their key somewhere outside. It doesn’t matter how safe you consider the hiding place, you’re putting your property (and anyone inside) at risk by being so careless with the security. Even the most inexperienced burglar will look under the doormat or under the plant pot when assessing your home – it’s considered as being the oldest trick in the book.

Forgetting to Lock Your Doors

You should always lock your doors. It doesn’t matter if you’re only popping next door, or to the shop, it’s extremely important that you keep them doors locked and secure! Locking your doors is the easiest way to secure your home from burglars, yet is the mistake that so many people still seem to make. Whilst a locked door might not stop a determined criminal – why make it easy for them?

Lack of Security

Locking your doors (and windows for that matter) is a good start in securing your home, but it shouldn’t be the only security that you have. You can do as much or as little as you want when it comes to installing security in the home, but it’s important that you do have something. Burglar alarms, motion sensors and cameras are all very good ways of protecting your property.

Letting the World Know That You’re Going on Holiday

The internet is a wonderful thing. Social media websites allow us to keep in touch with childhood friends, or family that we don’t get to see as much any more. However, it can also be a huge security risk. If you’re planning on going on holiday, you shouldn’t announce it over the internet. Don’t tell the whole of Facebook that you’re away for the week – you don’t know who could be reading your posts. Most burglars will target empty homes, so don’t give them the idea that yours is unoccupied.
